چکیده

We describe a cryogenic cavity-optomechanical system that combines Si3N4 membranes with a mechanically rigid Fabry–Perot cavity. The extremely high products of quality factor and frequency of the membranes allow us to cool a MHz mechanical mode to a phonon occupation of n̄ < 10, starting at a bath temperature of 5K. We show that even at cold temperatures thermally occupied mechanical modes of the cavity elements can be a limitation, and we discuss methods to reduce these effects sufficiently for achieving ground state cooling. This promising new platform should have versatile uses for hybrid devices and searches for radiation pressure shot noise.

Cryogenic optomechanics with a Si3N4 membrane and classical laser noise

We demonstrate a cryogenic optomechanical system comprising a flexible Si3N4 membrane placed at the center of a free-space optical cavity in a 400mK cryogenic environment. We observe a mechanical quality factor Q > 4× 106 for the 261 kHz fundamental drum-head mode of the membrane, and a cavity resonance halfwidth of 60 kHz. The optomechanical system therefore operates in the resolved sideband l...

Enhanced entanglement of two optical modes in optomechanical systems via an optical parametric amplifier

We investigate the effect of a degenerate optical parametric amplifier (OPA) placed inside an optomechanical cavity on the steady-state entanglement of two cavity modes, which jointly interact with a mechanical resonator. Two cavity modes are respectively driven at the red and blue sideband associated with the mechanical resonator, which generates entanglement between them in the limit of resol...

Ultra-high-Q phononic resonators on-chip at cryogenic temperatures

Long-lived, high frequency phonons are valuable for applications ranging from optomechanics to emerging quantum systems. For scientific as well as technological impact, we seek high-performance oscillators that offer a path towards chip-scale integration. Confocal bulk acoustic wave resonators have demonstrated an immense potential to support long-lived phonon modes in crystalline media at cryo...

Deformable two-dimensional photonic crystal slab for cavity optomechanics.

We have designed photonic crystal suspended membranes with optimized optical and mechanical properties for cavity optomechanics. Such resonators sustain vibration modes in the megahertz range with quality factors of a few thousand. Thanks to a two-dimensional square lattice of holes, their reflectivity at normal incidence at 1064 nm reaches values as high as 95%. These two features, combined wi...

Approaching the standard quantum limit of mechanical torque sensing

Reducing the moment of inertia improves the sensitivity of a mechanically based torque sensor, the parallel of reducing the mass of a force sensor, yet the correspondingly small displacements can be difficult to measure. To resolve this, we incorporate cavity optomechanics, which involves co-localizing an optical and mechanical resonance. With the resulting enhanced readout, cavity-optomechanic...
